WORKSHOP MICHAEL RYAN
“The Figure in Nature-No Difference”
5 – 9 June, 2023
Berkenrode Estate, Heemstede, The Netherlands
This workshop will be based on how we observe reality. We do that with an empty mind. A mind that is free of the past, free from how it “should be”, free of formulas, completely in the here and now. Only then do we have the possibility to continually view the world before us with sensitivity and excitement. So when we are creating, when we are looking at the subject, we are not attempting to copy what we see but to translate what we see into color relationships on a two-dimensional surface.
During our workshop I will help you to SEE light and color and to compose it beautifully, honestly, on your surface. We will be focussing on the figure in the landscape to help you break down and dispense with the needless projection of labels onto the subject matter. So, no “trees”, “grass”, “lips”, “flowers”, “eyes” or ” legs”. We will learn to see what is actually there before us, to look as young children with little vocabulary and see colored forms in relationship with other colored forms.
For those not familiar with pastel I will discuss the medium and show it’s possibilities as well as it’s limitations.
The American painter and teacher Charles Hawthorne (1873-1938) said in his book “Hawthorne on Painting”:
“Have the courage to set down the colors you see. Working outdoors your eye will be brought up to color-it has the effect of shaking off the shackles of your mind, showing you that you can do anything you please, making you dare.”
I look forward to our workshop!
